This is just what the name implies: Each week, I ask someone interesting a question and request that she/he respond in 50 words or less.
Or somewhere in the ballpark of 50 words. That’s why there’s an “-ish.” I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but this site isn’t exactly a bastion of rigidity.
My firsts guests of 2014 are the amazing Mario Correa and Julia Cunningham, the co-hosts of News & Notes on Entertainment Weekly Radio (SiriusXM channel 105 and @EWlive on Twitter). While on a cross-country road trip this past summer, my wife and I became obsessed with EW Radio generally and this show (which airs from 3:00–6:00, Monday–Friday) in particular.
Before joining News & Notes, Mario was co-host with Faith Salie of WNYC’s RelationShow, host and co-executive producer of the WRC-TV/NBC4 pilot PowerHouse, DC correspondent for PRI’s Fair Game, and a writer on the Animal Planet series Whoa! Sunday with Mo Rocca and the PBS documentary Electoral Dysfunction, among other TV projects. His play, Tail! Spin!, which starred Rachel Dratch and Mo Rocca, was a 2013 GLAAD Media Awards nominee for Best Off-Off Broadway Theatre. He tweets as @mariosity.
In addition to her News & Notes gig, you can find Julia hosting indie rock on Sirius XMU (channel 35), where she also works behind the scenes for the channel as a producer of the award-winning Blog Radio and Sirius XMU Sessions. She’s on Twitter as @juliasiriusxmu. Oh, and she and I may have gone to the same college.
When you have two pop culture junkies on your site, the conversation turns predictably serious, which would explain why I asked Mario and Julia this:
If your News & Notes co-host were a TV character, who would she/he be and why?
Mario said …
“If Julia were a TV character, she would absolutely be el bachelór—Juan Pablo. And that’s because, just as Juan Pablo is to every single one of his 27 would-be brides, Julia is ‘the other half’ I’ve been waiting for my whole life (insert tearful hot tub confession here). You think I’m joking, but as Julia and The Bachelor will both tell you, it’s not so easy letting someone become your insta-mate—whether in life, or just for three hours each day—and make them feel like you’ve been friends your whole life. Julia did that for me on day one, and that’s made all the difference to our show. I just hope one of those 27 señoritas is half as lucky!”
Julia said …
“If Mario were a TV character, he would be Sabrina Duncan from Charlie’s Angels. Was there more to Charlie’s Angels or even News & Notes than just jiggle? Duh! Mario, like Sabrina, is not just a beautiful face but the rock, glue, French maid, fashion designer, psychic, or any other outside cover that is necessary to make News & Notes amazing. Mario is the angel that I didn’t know I needed until the moment we met and he completed my pop culture sentences. Also, I think he is like Sabrina because he is constantly trying to solve crimes with his detective skills. As long as he doesn’t manipulate me with his sexuality like the other angels, I am fine with it.”
So basically, News & Notes is what happens when this:
Now you see why I try to tune in whenever I can.
Huge thanks to Mario and Julia for stopping by this week and for not dodging the tough questions.
